Was "half way" the correct setting for the gain?

Was the "ported box" tuned properly?

These factors can make or break a system.

High wattage does not necessarily mean loudness. You also need to look at the sensitivity (dB or SPL[Sound pressure Level]) of the sub.

Example:

Sub "A" is 1000 watts RMS/85dB
Sub "B" is 500 watts RMS/95dB

Sub "B" would actually be louder than sub "A" because the sensitvity is higher even though the power handling of sub "A" is higher.

This is how that works. The sensitivity of a sub is the SPL output the sub will have with 1 watt of power at 1 meter. For each doubling of power, you get a 3 dB gain in volume or SPL.

Power—Sub "A"–Sub "B"
1 watt = 85dB = 95dB
2 watts= 88dB = 98dB
4 watts = 91dB = 101dB
….
500 watts = 110dB = 120dB
…
1000 watts = 113dB = ——-

Even at 1000 watts on Sub "A", Sub "B" still pushes more dB with only 500 watts.

This is only an example and does not indicate actual dB output as this will depend on many factors such as enclosure used, cabin gain, etc.

With a sensitivity of 97 dB and 400 watts RMS power handling, it will push far more dB than either of those kickers and even with less power. This also means the amp required to push two of them will cost less too……only $140 for one sub.

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp for correct power matching and to minmize clipping.

First you should figure out why it blew. You probably have your gain too high. The gain is NOT A VOLUME KNOB! It has to be set correctly.

Use the L7, as it handles more power and will give you a little "breathing room" since you probably like to push subs to their limits. The zx750.1 probably puts out over 800 watts in reality, and you would be running the CVR's right up to their limit, so the L7 is a better choice.

2-12's, they have more overall surface area, bass is the displacement of air, you can move more air with more surface area, see where I'm going with this? Anyway there are different factors, but just by going on what you gave us… Also I'm not a fan of Kicker, I've noticed they have REALLY bad cones… You wouldn't be running the 12's to their limit, they're rated to handle 800 watts RMS, and if they don't call the manufacturer, new drivers for you… See when picking a sub/amp combo you want to match the RMS of both of the as evenly as possible AT the proper ohm… The person above me clearly has no idea what they're talking about, BECAUSE you can exceed the total RMS of the drivers by 15% SAFELY, WITHOUT ruining your drivers… Hope that helps!

That's not the proper way to set the gain, BUT the higher the volts you run to the amp the higher RMS output it typically has, do you have higher voltage alt? That's not too likely but worth a shot to check…
